IIM Ahmedabad Joins International Scholarship Scheme
By Tim Dhoul
Updated UpdatedThe one-year MBA at IIM Ahmedabad has joined an international scholarship scheme offering full financial assistance for international students looking to study in India.
The full-time IIM Ahmedabad one-year MBA program, aimed at candidates with ‘substantial’ work experience (averaging at around 10 years) is known as the PGPX (Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives) and, aside from the international immersion element of the program, full financial support is on offer, including tuition fees and accommodation for the duration of international students’ term of study.
The move looks to be an attempt on the part of one of India’s, and indeed Asia’s, most prestigious business schools to attract more international students to pursue their MBA in India – where international student numbers are currently much lower than is commonly seen at most other leading business schools around the world.
The results of the latest QS Jobs & Salary Trends Report, as well as those of a new GMAC survey, highlight MBA job prospects in India for those studying within the country. IIM Ahmedabad’s PGPX one-year MBA program was launched in 2006, but the Gujarat-based school has it foundations in the 1960s.
International students of 141 nations eligible
The international scholarship scheme – or, the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Scholarship Programme, to give its full title – was launched in 1964 and is backed by the Indian government. The aim of the initiative is to encourage cooperation between emerging nations, and this is reflected in the eligibility criteria for interested international students.
More than 140 countries are included in the list of partners for the international scholarship scheme – encompassing much of Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America. So, international students from countries as diverse as Uruguay, Fiji, Egypt and Jamaica would all find themselves eligible.
To apply, candidates would have to apply for the scholarship in their home country and receive a nomination for that country’s Indian Embassy, as well as applying directly to the IIM Ahmedabad one-year MBA program. The school is now accepting applications for an April 2015 start-date.
According to the international scholarship scheme’s website, the ITEC program emphasizes the role of technical and management training in cooperation between emerging nations.
